IMPORTANT Summer Safety

Summer can be a terrific time for both dogs and their owners. However, summer also brings unique risks to your dog's health that you should keep in mind.

Some Summer Dangers can include:

1. Heat stroke

Heat stroke occurs when your dog’s body temperature rises. It is most common when dogs are left in cars for too long, or when they are exercised in the heat. Never leave your dog in a car on a hot day and always remember that your windows should be at least halfway down.

2. Sunburn

Dogs can burn in the sun just like people can. White, light-colored, and thinly coated dogs have an increased risk of sunburn. Sunburn can cause pain, itching, peeling, and other skin problems.

3. Burned foot pads

Sidewalk, patio, street, sand, and other surfaces can burn your dog’s footpads. Walk your dog in the morning and at night when outdoor surfaces are cooler. Press your hand onto a surface for 30 seconds to test it before allowing your dog to walk on it.

4. Dehydration

Prevent dehydration by providing your dog with access to fresh and cool water.

5. Fireworks

The loud noises and sudden flash of bright lights can startle your dog, causing it be scared. If you cannot avoid being around fireworks, then keep your dog on short leash beside you .

6. Parasites

Ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects are at their peak during the summer months. Talk to your veterinarian about an appropriate protection.

7. Chemicals in the water

Swimming in pools can be fun for you and your dog. However, chlorine can irritate a dog's skin and upset its stomach. Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming and do not let it drink pool water. Provide your dog with fresh water to drink whenever possible.

8. Seasonal allergies

Fleas, mold, flowers, and other potential allergens are common during the summer. Allergies cause itching, coughing, sneezing, and other discomforts. Consult your vet if and when required.

9. Getting lost

Be mindful of your dog to prevent it from becoming lost. Make sure your dog always has proper identification.
